I think what makes an artist authentic is their sense of style, the way the spit they lyrics, or the issues they rap about.
Arrested Development is authentic in every sense of the word. This group is sure of who they are and the issues they rap about. they have their own unique style that alot of rap groups were not up on. Arrested Deveopment is a group that wasn't afraid to wear baggy clothes and locks. This is something that helped them to stand out in the rap world. Even in the song Everyday People the group talked about how they were made fun of because of their cloithing. On a different scale the clothing is what set them apart from the rest. The clohting in it self had a story to tell. the clothing represented their ansestors and life. when I say bagggy clothes I don't mean they were hangging off their behind like the rappers we see today. I mean that the women were not in tight fitting clothing. The women were represented just as the men, equal. They did this so that the focus was't on the womens bodies, and that did'nt take away from the lyrics. To me this was ground breaking, and some how my generation has replaced that with sex sells
Arrested Development rapped about our own people; black on black crime and how they wanted no parts of that type of life. From going back to Tennessee to Everydasy People Arreseted Develolpment wanted the world to see that it's not just the government making peoples lives bad, but it's one another. They wanted blacks to take a look at themselves before pointing the finger. That in itself is authentic. I mean to be able to challenge your own people to stop making excuses for themselves. Outside of that they made the point that your own kind don't want anything to do with you ,or may even be the death of you.
Arrested Development is authentic and in a league ot their own. Only a few will ,or have been as successful as them as they are. They were considered to be Bouisouise because of their style. Arrested Development has been critizied and talked about because of their stlye. At the end of the day you have to admitt that they foucused on alot of isses that rappers today dare to touch. Everyone is too busy blending in while Arrested Development is still standing out!

What defines real hip-hop? I think what defines real hip-hop depends on how you discuss it. To anyone, anything that a rap artist "raps" about can be defined as real hip-hop. To another person, the way the rapper/s act, dress, and/or present themselves can be defined as real hip-hop. The topic can be broaden in so many ways and very different levels. To me, I define it as a struggle that is rapped about in a song. It can be a struggle of victory or a struggle of negative things. It can express feelings that any and everyone is/or has been through. It can be expressed through music and does not have to have a catchy flow like other songs. The clothes/ appearance can help express it, but I think what is important are the words that are used.

There are some rappers out there that rap about their political views, or just politics in general. That can be considered real hip-hop because the rappers are voicing their opinion about things that they think are wrong or right.They are rapping about it in a way where if they get their point across and out to enough people, it can change their political views or change the politician's point of view. Rappers who rap about anything that can help educate or inform the people who are listening to it can be considered real hip-hop. It is expressing things that people need to know and is something that they can use and take with them to the future. If it talks about the struggles that they have been through, it can be considered as real hip-hop. It can be where they talk about how rapping helped keep them alive, keeping them away from the streets. It can be where they talk about the things that is going on in the communities where they grew up, like drugs, people on the streets homeless, or just what they had to go through to get where they are today. I think that anything of truth, basically is considered real hip-hop.

Rappers who rap about anything that degrades women, other artists, or people in general is not considered real hip-hop. If they have to rap about all negativity to make sales, then it is not real hip-hop. Yes those things can be included in a struggle, but there are many different ways where the artist can approach it. I honestly believe that it is not real hip-hop, its just ignorance. So to me, real hip-hop does not thave to be clean, but as long as it is not degrading anyone and is educating the listeners it is real hip-hop. It can talk about their struggles and more than likely that will not be clean. It can be political and help other people think about their actions and help them with their everyday life. Real hip-hop is the best hip-hop.

Contreversey and the Everyday Life

The controversial lyrics of hip hop have been debated for decades. In the past decade thier has been a rapid increase in controversial lyrics, songs, and albums. But what exactly makes a song controversial? Is it the explict language, the deragtory refrence to women, or the constant mention of drugs. Let us not forget about the mention of murder and other problems that plague the community. Late rapper Tupac Shakur brought many controversial problems of the community to main stream with his 1991 song Brenda's Got A Baby. This song brought to light many controversial issues such as teen pregancy, illiterate children, and incest.This song was consider controversial because it was about a twelve year old girl. Though people of America feel these should topics should not be brought to light, industry heads constantly glorify them through the work of the artist.
This leads one to ask is hip hop authentic? If not what makes it authentic? Depending on the place you grew up many can say yes it's real. But for people that did not grow up around this, it can lead them to say maybe not. The primmary place that hip hop gets its authenticity is from the different places "hoods" of america. That being said brings us to the point that many industry heads are not from these hoods. But they constantly get to put their two cents in every song or album. Can it be authentic since many of them never set foot in the hood or since none have been in the enviornment of the hood. Rick James stated it best when he said, "If you ain't from the ghetto, don't come to the ghetto." He made this statement to various industry heads that kept puitting thier ideas into what was hood.

To conclude this, hip hop never existed. Everyone could define hip hop in their own words. It was just music put together that sounds nice. The nice beats makes the difference of the class group for various artists.
