Worst Enemy

Song Title: Worst Enemy
Artist: Gucci Mane
Album: The State Vs. Radric Davis
Lyrics Provided by azlyrics.com with some corrections by me

Overall Message: The overall message of the song is Gucci Mane addressing his "beef" with rappers such as Young Jeezy and T.I. He also addresses his inner demons and admits to the fact that he has made many mistakes in his rap career but is trying to correct them.

Favorite Lines/paraphrase:
"you can help someone and love someone but still they turn and burn you
so i warn you in advance watch out cuz so called friends will con you
think MJG said it best when will I ever know who my friends
through thick and thin cuz so called friends will turn to foes."

Besides the chorus these are my favorite lines. These lines basically explain how friends, they people you let get the closest to you, can hurt you, trick you, and become an enemy. Gucci is trying to let everyone listening know what he has been through with his "friends turned foes" so that others won't have to go through it.

Chorus/paraphrase:

I'm my best friend
and I'm my worst enemy
and no one else can hurt me unless I let them
is you feelin me
and misery loves company and I had my share of misery
no mystery my infamy got me in hip hop history
First Tupac died then Biggie died
and that greatly impacted me
then history repeated itself through me and I make history
so I don't turn around no more
I look at whats in front of me
I'm focused on the future cuz yesterday is history

The Chorus parallels/reflects the overall message of the song in a short version. The first four lines mean that every individual is their own best friend (because you're always going to have yourself to count on and no one knows you better) but at the same time we are all our worst enemy (because we make decisions that sometimes harm our life and we also decide who an what we allow into our lives to hurt us). In the next two lines he states a famous quote "misery loves company" meaning people who feel their own lives are miserable try to make others feel the same way. He says he has had his share of misery meaning he has been affected by these types of people many times before. He says his infamy got him into hip hop history because of the numerous court dates, charges, and prison sentences he has served (i.e murder charges, drug charges, and parole violations). The next three lines after that are pretty simple. In the last three lines Gucci Mane is saying he doesn't focus on the past anymore he just works towards his future because the past can't be undone,i.e his mistakes.

Importance:
I feel that this song is important because it contains many moral philosophic ideals and theories on life and friendship. The chorus gives strength to the messages given in the song. This song also contains meaning, lyrics, and a unique beat which to me are the three points that each hip hop song needs to even be considered as Hip Hop history worthy, but just two of the three will make a song good. Each verse of the song contains a different ideal along with experiences the rapper has encountered.

In the first verse the rapper begins with a quote meaning that people shouldn't be stubborn because it can come back and hurt you. He also displays his usual "tuff guy" persona by basically addressing his "beef" with anyone by saying he will meet them anywhere when he has time. Yet on the other hand it he is trying to get to the root of the problem which many people these days fail to do and if it was done it could save many lives. He also puts the ideal out there that sometimes people should swallow their pride, let the past be the past, and not hold grudges against one another. These words contain key messages that if the whole world grasped, would make the world a much safer and less violent place.

In the second verse Gucci admits to his mistakes and lets everyone no that he is not perfect nor is anyone else, which represents his first step towards self improvement whether it be psychological, moral, or religious. He also states that words have power. He addresses how his words have had a negative effect on people and owns up to that fact. He also makes a moral stand about men hurting women, he feels that they don't deserve it. The whole song talks about friends being enemies but in this verse he speaks on how one of his own foes gave him advice an encouraged him. Gucci also admits that he, Jeezy, and T.I like every other rapper in the world are poets and are role models to millions which any people and rappers alike often forget.

The third and final verse brings the song together around the main focus which is that the people closest to you can hurt you the most. I feel that many people can relate to thsi song an especially this verse because almost everyone has been hurt or crossed by a friend or someone close to them. This first is important because of the warning it holds to those that haven't went through an experience like what Gucci is mentioning.

I think this song isn't telling people to not trust people as much as it is letting people know not everyone can be trusted as well as his morals on respecting women, ideals on settling discrepancies, and philosophies toward self improvement and modesty. It is because of this songs morals, ideals, philosophies, lyrics, and beat that i feel it deserves a spot in hip hop history.

[Chorus]
I'm my best friend
and I'm my worst enemy
and no one else can hurt me unless I let them
is you feelin me
and misery loves company and I had my share of misery
no mystery my infamy got me in hip hop history
First Tupac died then Biggie died
and that greatly impacted me
then history repeated itself through me and I make history
so I don't turn around no more
I look at whats in front of me
I'm focused on the future cuz yesterday is history

[Verse 1]
A hard head makes a soft ass
guess yo mom didn't teach ya that
pick a spot to beef with me and that spot I will meet ya at
but let me check my schedule
I'm free Tuesday 3 weeks from now
you bring your crew I bring my crew
just pick a time and side of town
zone 6 is my stomping ground
but I guess you know that by now
but everywhere you go you hear me
that's why your upset right now
bought a Phantom and a Lamb
but I'm in my vette right now
I raped the game without a rubber
bank account are pregnant now
the day they tried to murder me a day I cant forget about
and I don't wish no death on homie
just want him to hear me out
think about the past and all the many things we talked about
think about all the people influenced by what comes out our mouth

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
I am not the perfect person
they don't spit the perfect verses
I wouldn't hurt a girl on purpose cuz I feel they don't deserve it
I admit my words can hurt
I dissed tiny she didn't deserve it
our song got her didn't interpret it right and I'm sorry for it
T.I. many times encouraged
told me face the game with courage
Clay gave me some great advice and still today I thankful for it
Me Jeezy and T.I. share one thing in common all are poets
role model to young people though at times man we still ignore it
and yall don't owe respect to me and I don't like apologies
just diss me till you satisfied
i swear it doesn't bother me
sticks and stones will break my bones and bullets
wont reflect off me but words and insults only show the World how yall respecting me

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
All my homies ain't my homies
half my friends no longer want me
im still hungry as I was when I did my first live performance
things I got I know they want it
things I done they haven't done it
though they say that they my friends
I know that these niggas opponent
we can joke and laugh and party
but I know their smiles are phoney
but I still pray that the Lord give em all the things they wanted
all the money in the World cant get the joy I'm felling homie
like the third day with a woman like you and not for your money
you can help someone and love someone but still they turn and burn you
so i warn you in advance watch out cuz so called friends will con you
think MJG said it best when will I ever know who my friends
through thick and thin cuz so called friends will turn to foes.

[Chorus]

The video isnt all that good but i feel this is one of his best songs considering the lyrical meanings.
This is for everyone who thinks Gucci has no lyrics.
